Outreach Ministries:

Update for October, 2007

One of our Outreach Goals continues to be finding service opportunity to build the Good Shepherd family fellowship. We've just completed two such opportunities.

First, on Saturday about fifteen Team Good Shepherd members worked the field of North Denver gleaning for COMPA. We were able to find a lot of peppers and eggplant in the field after the normal harvest. It was a very positive experience and we will try to do it again next year with a goal of having some of the younger parish families join with us! There are pictures of this activity at the Church.

This evening  Claudia Flake, Heather Land, Barbara Verble, Harry Need, Bob Trular, Rob Polete and myself served dinner to 102 men, women and families at St. Clare's Ministry at our now normal third Tuesday. Kip Travis was our "pinch hitter' (had to bring in some baseball language!). In addition to the 102 individuals served we also served 53 seconds. Our menu of pork and noodles with green beans, salad and desert was a big hit. This ministry continues to capture those of us who volunteer for it.

Finally, we noticed the closet at ST. Clare's (SPaSM) was very low and I want to remind you that this Sunday, October 21, we are collecting socks, skivvies and gently used winter clothing for SPaSM and St. Francis Center. Please be generous as we approach the winter season.

Do you have Outreach ideas or do you want to be a part of Team Good Shepherd as we find service opportunities for our time and talents? Let any of us know.

Thank you.

Overview of Outreach Ministry “key” priority clients

32nd. Avenue Jubilee Center- The mission of the 32nd Avenue Jubilee Center is to help our Northwest Denver neighbors move away from poverty and need. Key activities include: The Bienvenidos Food Bank, Health Care Initiative, Youth Enrichment Program (serving school age youth, including an after school program), and Program for Intercultural Communication & Language Skills. Good Shepherd provides financial, in-kind and service support.

Bridgeway- Bridgeway is a small, non-profit organization that provides housing, support, and education for pregnant & parenting teens. Bridgeway also offers on-site daycare for current & former resident’s babies. Good Shepherd provides financial and in-kind support.

CO Haiti Project- The Colorado Haiti Project is a non-profit organization dedicated to building cross-cultural understanding of Christ’s presence in the world. In partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, The Colorado Haiti Project offers educational and medical resources to the people of Chevalier/Petit Trou de Nippes so that, in working together to meet these basic human needs, we may grow together in God’s reconciling love. Good Shepherd provided financial support to The Colorado Haiti Project in 2006.

Covenant Cupboard –Covenant Cupboard is an Arapahoe County based food pantry supported primarily by The Presbyterian Church of the Covenant (host), Good Shepherd and St. Peter Lutheran Churches. Covenant Cupboard’s mission is to address the food security needs of seniors, disabled individuals, and the unemployed or underemployed households in our community in a compassionate, dignified and secure environment. Good Shepherd provides financial, in-kind and service support to Covenant Cupboard. We have two members of Good Shepherd who serve as Board members for Covenant Cupboard.

House of Hope- Family Tree House of Hope is a homeless shelter and self-sufficiency program, providing safe shelter and a broad range of services to women with children, helping them to be safe, strong and self-reliant. Good Shepherd provides financial, in-kind and service support to House of Hope. In 2007 we would like to renew of program of providing a monthly dinner for House of Hope.

Mary’s Hope- The mission of Mary’s Hope Workshops is to provide tools for spiritual healing and recovery of survivors of profound childhood abuses.  To accomplish this mission, Mary’s Hope Workshops conducts workshops and retreats to educate about the spiritual wounds left in the wake of childhood abuse and techniques to facilitate the healing and recovery of those wounds. Good Shepherd provides financial support to Mary’s Hope.

St. Clare’s Ministry- St. Clare’s Ministry is a ministry of the Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Mary. This ministry includes St. Clare’s Supper, Overnight Shelter, Clothes Closet and Community Vegetable Garden activities. St. Clare’s Supper began in some form over 30 years ago with sack lunches.  It evolved through the years to a full sit down dinner served every Tuesday night.  The dinner program evolved even further with the addition of a “clothing closet” and finally into an Emergency Overnight Shelter. Good Shepherd provides financial and in-kind support for St. Clare’s Ministry.

St. Francis Center- The mission of St. Francis Center is to reveal God’s love for humanity by providing a safe place for people who are homeless in Metro Denver to meet their basic needs for day-to-day survival while offering them assistance to transition out of homelessness. Good Shepherd provides financial, in-kind and service support to St. Francis. Additionally, members of Good Shepherd serve on the Board and Development Committee.

Sudanese Community Church- The Sudanese congregation was formed to minister to the spiritual and temporal needs of the growing refugee community in Colorado. The Sudanese Community Church conducts all pastoral and sacramental functions and provides English classes, women’s support group, assistance with transportation, and in every way we try to assist our congregation with their basic needs. In 2006 Outreach provided only very limited in-kind support to Sudanese Community Church.
