Reaching Our Kids For Christ
The goal of Children’s Ministries is to reach our kids for Christ. This includes offering Sunday school every week, with the exception of Easter and Christmas. We offer Godly Play for children aged three years through 2nd grade. The 3rd-5th grade students use Living the Good News. Both Godly Play and Living the Good News are curricula that are designed to help students continue moving forward on their spiritual journey.
In addition to our weekly Sunday offerings, we have special events over the year that include an Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday, an All Church Picnic in June, Vacation Bible school in June and an Advent Celebration after Thanksgiving
Each Sunday Good Shepherd offers a Sunday school program for children aged three years and potty-trained through 5th grade. Classes start promptly at 9:45 am, and are located in the basement of the church building. Since we have only a short amount of time to spend together, please do your best to have children arrive on time. Please be sure to take your children's personal belongings (such as coats, gloves, toys) upstairs with you to the Sanctuary.
The children are divided into three classrooms:
- Three years through 2nd grade: Godly Play
- 3rd through 5th grades: Living the Good News
- Middle and High School: re:form Foundational Theology
After approximately one hour, the children are brought upstairs during the Peace to rejoin their families and participate in the Eucharist.
Kids are always welcome in our worship services, wiggles and noises and all, but if children become restless and parents prefer to take them out of the sanctuary, parents may sit with their children in the narthex (hallway). The service can still be heard on speakers, and coloring books and crayons are found in the straw baskets underneath the visitor's table.
We are excited to incorporate an expanded Godly Play program for our children aged 3 years and potty trained through 2nd grade. It is an imaginative approach to working with children, an approach that supports, challenges, nourishes and guides their spiritual journey. In Godly Play, we enter into parables, sacred stories and sacred liturgy in order to discover God, ourselves, one another and the world around us.
The 3rd through 5th graders are using Living the Good News, an Episcopal curriculum, based on the Sunday scripture readings, which encourages and facilitates family conversations around the theme for the day.
For the well-being of all children, parents should only bring healthy children to a classroom. Any child who has experienced the following symptoms in the last 24 hours needs to stay home:
- on antibiotics less than 24 hours,
- congested cough,
- runny nose with a cold, or
- pink eye.
